The archaeological excavation of the ancient city of Kastabala in Osmaniye Province, southern Turkey, is an ongoing journey into the depths of history, uncovering the remnants of a once-thriving civilization. Kastabala-Hierapolis, nestled near the Ceyhan (Pyramos) River and overlooking a picturesque plain, holds a prominent position as one of the most significant cities of ancient Cilicia.
The roots of Kastabala’s significance trace back to the Seleucid era, notably under the reign of IV. Antiochos, who bestowed upon it the name “HIEROPOLIS,” signifying a holy city due to the longstanding worship of the goddess Artemis Perasia within its boundaries.
Under the capable leadership of Faris Demir from the archaeology department of Osmaniye Korkut Ata University (OKÜ), the Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums of the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism spearheads the meticulous excavation efforts at Kastabala. Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Faris Demir shared insights into the ongoing discoveries and future plans for this ancient site.
Exciting developments are on the horizon, including a planned “stone exhibition” and the restoration of a colonnaded street within the ancient city. Progress is also evident in the restoration of the theater, which is nearing completion, along with ongoing excavations at the amphitheater—a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the archaeological team.
Kastabala’s strategic location, just 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) from Osmaniye city center, makes it a historical treasure trove, boasting a network of pathways, a majestic theater, a castle, and columns dating back a staggering 2,500 years. Demir envisions Osmaniye evolving into a cultural hub with the completion of these restoration and preservation efforts, positioning it prominently on the tourism and cultural map.
The Roman-period theater, with an impressive 80% of its structure preserved, holds promise as a focal point for cultural and historical exploration. As the archaeological excavations continue throughout the year, meticulous planning for cleaning and landscaping ensures that future visitors can traverse the ancient city comfortably, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Kastabala’s past.
