The 2,700-Year-Old Rock Tombs of Donalar, Kastamonu

Nestled in the picturesque district of Taşköprü in Kastamonu, Turkey, lies a hidden gem of ancient history—the 2,700-year-old rock tombs of Donalar. However, this unique archaeological site is now facing an imminent threat of extinction due to neglect and vandalism, raising concerns among historians and conservationists.

Donalar, also known as Kalekapı, is situated just 10 km from the renowned Pompeiopolis Ancient City, once the capital of Paphlogania, along the Karadere River, a tributary of Amnias (Gökırmak). The region’s historical significance is intertwined with its rich cultural heritage, including rock tombs adorned with intricate animal figures representing diverse civilizations.

Efforts to protect and preserve this heritage have been underway through initiatives led by Kastamonu University and Taşköprü Municipality under the Taşköprü Local Action Group Association. However, recent assessments have revealed alarming signs of neglect and vandalism within the Donalar Rock Tomb complex.

Studies conducted inside the rock tombs have uncovered evidence of damage caused by concrete breakers, resulting in cracks and water leakage in the ceilings. Additionally, metallic tools used by treasure hunters have been detected, leading to the destruction of precious artifacts, including a tomb featuring two lion figures.

Lütfi Gültekin, deputy director of culture and social affairs at Taşköprü Municipality, emphasized the historical and cultural significance of Donalar, highlighting its unique animal figures that set it apart from other tombs in Anatolia.

The façade of the Donalar Rock Tomb, towering 10 meters above the ground, features a small tomb chamber accessible through low doors. Intricate details such as columns adorned with echinoid elements and square abacus, along with crouching bull carvings, showcase the craftsmanship and artistry of ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region.

As concerns mount over the deteriorating state of the Donalar Rock Tomb complex, urgent action is needed to safeguard this invaluable heritage. Collaborative efforts involving local authorities, conservationists, and the community are essential to prevent further damage and ensure the preservation of this unique archaeological site for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
